The first Basic Law Public Speaking Contest is to be held in Hong Kong to enhance people's awareness of the Basic Law, in particular among young people, announced the Hong Kong government Saturday.

The contest is jointly organized by the Committee on the Promotion of Civil Education (CPCE) of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau and the Peninsula Junior Chamber.

A kick-off ceremony was held at the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Center with Chairman of the CPCE Daniel Heung, Secretary for Home Affairs Patrick Ho, and President of the Peninsula Junior Chamber Boris Cheng officiating at the event.

The campaign slogan is "Understand the Basic Law, Learn the Rights and Responsibilities for All". The campaign aims to promote the Basic Law in a lively manner through various means and to show that the Basic Law is closely related to Hong Kong people's daily lives.

The contest is divided into two divisions: Tertiary School Division for tertiary students and Open Division for general public. Members of the public are welcome to join the contest as individual, family or corporate participants. The first three winners of each division will be awarded 5,000, 3,000 and 1,000 HK dollars respectively.

The public speaking contest will be held in November this year and the deadline for entry is Oct. 16.

To tie in with the public speaking contest, roving exhibitions will be held at universities, colleges and shopping malls from August to October.
