The coming year will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Wang Qi, a Chinese master of woodcutting who passed away in 2016.

A total of 140 works by Wang, including engravings, sketches and ink paintings, were displayed at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing on Dec 8.

Born in Chongqing in 1918, Wang first learned calligraphy from his father, also a calligrapher. From the 1930s, the artist started his journey of engraving. Many of his works, made with strong passion, feature the construction of water dams and wood factories after the founding of New China.

For the exhibition, which runs through Feb 25, Wang’s family donated the artist’s 142 works to the academy.
