Political adviser advocates for seniors

A political adviser and gerontologist on Monday called for concerted efforts to create a more friendly environment for the elderly as society is aging rapidly.
Huang Gairong, head of Henan Provincial People's Hospital gerontology department, said on the sidelines of the fifth session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference that seniors are a major force in promoting cultural inheritance and societal development.
"It is important for them to stay optimistic and actively participate in social activities," she said.
Huang also said concerted efforts are needed to improve the quality of life of older adults.
"As dealing with an aging society has become a national strategy, efforts devoted to integrating medical and elderly care services, providing community-based healthcare services and building more facilities tailored for the elderly have been intensified," she said.
