Changning district in Shanghai recently hosted a three-day festival celebrating a civilized lifestyle and rich cultural heritage at the Hongqiao Art Center, showcasing the district's commitment to fostering a harmonious community and promoting cultural exchange.

The highlight of the festival, which lasted from May 9 to 11, was the premiere of the first episode of a series of short videos titled "A Foreign Perspective on Civilization: Stories of the New Era".

The main character of the series is Wiley Krapf, an associate professor of law at East China University of Political Science and Law, originally from the United States. Having been in Changning since 2007, Krapf expressed his deep affection for the district, citing its lush green spaces, convenient lifestyle and welcoming community. He remarked, "Changning has truly become home to me."

In the video, Krapf shared his exploration of key sites embodying the concept of "whole-process people's democracy" in the district, including the Local Legislative Outreach Office Exhibition Hall at the Gubei Civic Centre in the Hongqiao subdistrict. He commended the district's inclusive decision-making process that values community input.

Another featured resident, Celine Chanut, a French volunteer for Shanghai New Era Civilization Practice, highlighted her love for Changning district as a bird-watcher. She praised the region for its diverse wildlife species and pet-friendly environment, emphasizing the district's natural beauty and tranquility.

The festival also included speeches from 11 representatives recommended by subdistricts and government departments, who shared their perspectives on the progress of civilization in Changning district, guided by the principle of the "People's City". Discussions focused on public service, the promotion of traditional culture, and fostering a civilized lifestyle.

Outside the art center, a themed market fair unfolded, featuring over 70 vendors offering a variety of services. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with intangible cultural heritage, seek health consultations, access convenient services, and more.

Enterprises showcased green and organic agricultural products, while officials educated residents on cybersecurity and transportation safety. Additionally, residents received policy briefings and legal consultations at service stations, enhancing their understanding of community initiatives and resources available to them.
