State Grid Shanghai project wins big at World AI Conference

The Megacity Intelligent Energy Management Master project was one of the top-prize winners at the 2025 World AI Conference & High-level Meeting on Global AI Governance (WAIC) in Shanghai on Saturday.
The management system, operated by State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Co and powered by the AI+Guangming Large Model, stood out from among 223 projects. The prize, formally known as the 2025 SAIL (Superior AI Leader) Award, attracted submissions internationally from organizations which believe their projects demonstrate either major technological breakthroughs or strong application potential in the field of artificial intelligence.
According to State Grid Shanghai, China is making rapid progress in the development of a new power system, marked by a faster shift in its electricity generation mix and the most significant technological transformation in over a century. As the installed capacity of renewable energy continues to rise, there is an urgent need to tap into the flexibility of demand-side resources.
With the help of the AI+Guangming Large Model, the company has built an integrated smart energy management engine, which enables accurate forecasting and rapid response to the grid's complex, multi-dimensional states.
To date, the project has generated over 8 billion yuan ($1.12 billion) in economic benefits and reduced carbon emissions by 510,000 tons annually.
