'Shanghai Legend' starts shooting

Famous Chinese director Jia Zhangke's new documentary "Shanghai Legend" started shooting in the city on May 31, 2009.

"Shanghai Legend" starts shooting.

The film will be released in April, 2010 as a tribute to the Shanghai World Expo. It will introduce Shanghai's architecture, culture and life and explore the Expo theme, "Better City, Better Life."

Jia said that the film will mirror the past, present and future of Shanghai as well as the stories behind its people. Some overseas cities such as New York and Tokyo, where Shanghainese live, will also be involved.

Zhu Yonglei, deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, said the film will convey a message of the confidence which China feels towards the future to Expo 2010 visitors and people all over the world.

Born in 1970 in Shanxi Province, Jia's art-house movies "Platform," "Xiao Wu" and "The World" received acclaim from critics and movie fans alike.

His "Still Life," the tale of two outsiders who travel to a village near the Three Gorges seeking their long-lost spouses, won the Golden Lion at the 2006 Venice Film Festival.
