A major migration official suspected of malfeasance and accepting bribes has been jailed in Huiyang of Huizhou in the eastern part of South China's Guangdong Province.

He Guanghu, director of the migration office with the Huiyang city government, is undergoing questioning by the local procuratorate following his arrest late last month.

He is suspected of accepting bribes valued at more than 380,000 yuan (US$46,000) from a local contractor after illegally granting residential construction projects for resettling the people from Three Gorges area to a contractor.

He's case was exposed and he was detained in late February after government officials received reports from residents who complained that their newly completed houses began cracking, leaking, and sinking at their foundations.

Residents had moved into the houses in 2002.

He's neglect of duties is estimated to have caused economic losses worth more than 5 million yuan (US$602,400).

The local government established a task force to investigate the case and found He was behind the poor quality housing projects --

in 263 houses in 13 villages.

He was officially arrested late last month.

According to officials, investigators are trying to determine how many other people may be involved in the case.

"Those who bear responsibilities in the case will be punished," the official said.

Liu Jinzhou, Party secretary in Huizhou, said his government has decided to invest more than 2.77 million yuan (US$333,735) to help reconstruct the houses this year.

Liu said the investment for the reconstruction projects would be expanded, if needed.

Liu's government has required relevant departments and units to map out detailed plans for re-construction, which will begin in the first half of April.

About 900 migrating people from the Three Gorges areas are now living in the 13 villages in Huiyang. Most of them come from former Kaixian County under Chongqing Municipality.

Guangdong Province borders Hong Kong and Macao and is one of the major destinations to receive migrating Three Gorges people.

In addition to Huizhou, the cities of Foshan and Zhaoqing have attracted migrants, too.

By the end of last year, the southern Chinese province has registered about 8,000 persons from the Three Gorges area who have to move out of the area to give way for the construction of the Three Gorges Dam.
