The champagne remains on ice at AC Milan after a disappointing Sunday afternoon for the Rossoneri in Serie A.

They were only able to manage a goalless draw at Udinese while nearest rivals Roma recorded an impressive 3-0 home win over Empoli.

Francesco Totti scored for Roma after 41 and 89 minutes, sandwiching John Carew's strike.

Carew had an eventful match, despite featuring for just five minutes.

He came off the bench after 63 minutes, scored his goal a minute later, and then in the 68th minute was red-carded along with Empoli's Jorge Vargas after the pair scuffled.

Roma are now six points adrift of Milan with three rounds of games remaining.

Third-placed Juventus suffered a shock 4-3 reverse in their Stadio Delle Alpi where Lecce produced the most remarkable performance of the day.

Daniele Franceschini scored and Axel Konan netted twice in the first half as Lecce took a 3-1 lead into the interval.

David Trezeguet had struck Juve's goal, but they conceded again after the break when Lecce's most prized asset, striker Javier Chevanton, put the away side 4-1 up.

Juve claimed a goal back when Enzo Maresca, standing in a crowd of players, managed to head home fellow substitute Alessandro Del Piero's free-kick.

Del Piero then hit the target himself in the 79th minute with a clever turn and low shot to bring Juve to within one goal and set up a grandstand finish.

But Lecce managed to hold out to claim three more vital points in their fight against relegation.

The battle for fourth place remains open, with Inter Milan still just a point ahead of Lazio and Parma.

Inter and Lazio shared the spoils in a goalless draw at the San Siro, while Parma were held 1-1 at Reggina.

Diomansy Kamara got the only goal as lowly Modena gave their prospects of avoiding relegation were given a shot in the arm by a 1-0 home win over Sampdoria.

Two of Italian football's luminaries were also in the goals on Sunday.

Fabrizio Ravanelli put second-bottom Perugia 1-0 up at Brescia, only for Roberto Baggio to salvage a point for the home side with a superb free-kick. Fabio Petruzzi of Brescia was sent off late in the game.

Already relegated are Ancona who have accumulated just 10 points from 31 games after a 2-0 loss at home to mid-table Chievo, and Siena are in danger of joining them in Serie B next season after being beaten 3-1 at Bologna for whom former Chelsea midfielder Samuele Dalla Bona was among the scorers.
