The ninth session of the Fortune Global Forum is expected to be held in Beijing in May of next year according to an announcement from AOL Time Warner Co Wednesday in the capital.

The theme of the 2005 event will be "China and the New Asian Century.''

Already a dominant force in trade, China will overtake the United States to become the world's largest economy by mid-century,according to Fortune & Fortune Small Business Group Publisher Michael Federle.

"As the economic gravity shifts, the dynamics of the global economy will change dramatically," Federle said.

Tapping into the enormous potential of China and its Asian neighbours and preparing for the new economic dynamic are essential for multinationals looking to prosper in the decades ahead.

The Fortune Global Forum will bring the chiefs of global businesses together with political leaders, policy-makers, and scholars from around China's regions and the world to assess the issues of interest in the new Asian century, said FORTUNE International Editor Robert Friedman.

State Council Information Office Vice-Minister Qian Xiaoqian said that AOL Time Warner's decision to launch next year's forum in China reflected to some extent the positive and optimistic attitudes of the world's business circles in relation to the nation's economy.

"In addition, the attention being paid to Beijing is due to the 2008 Olympic Games," Qian said.

It is the third time for FORTUNE to hold the event in China, after its 1999 session in Shanghai and in 2001 in Hong Kong.

Each year, the Fortune Global Forum gathers global chief executives, leaders in government, scholars, economists, and the top-ranking Fortune editors for an intensive exploration of key issues facing multinational corporations, in a location that is a focal point of global economic interest,

The Fortune Global Forum is open solely to chairmen, presidents, CEOs, and top managing directors of large multinationals.
