Indian army has killed five militants in Kupwara district in north Indian-administered Kashmir since Friday night.

Militants were killed by an ambush party of the army nearly two kilometers inside the Line of Control near Machil sector and search operations were continuing, the Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted local defense sources as saying on Saturday.

The militants were challenged late Friday night and a firefight ensued which lasted for nearly an hour.

During search operations, two bodies of militants were recovered by the army personnel, they said.

As the army personnel were retrieving the bodies of the slain militants, some surviving militants opened fire on them. The fire was retaliated, killing the remaining three militants as well, the sources added.

Meanwhile, army troops have recovered two greeting cards carrying bombs from a senior commander of a militant group called Tehreek-Ul-Mujahideen and his body guard, who were killed in an encounter with troops in Poonch district in southwest Kashmir on Wednesday.

"The attractive looking greeting card bombs are set off as soon as they are opened," local official sources said.

A major tragedy was averted Saturday when security forces discovered a 10-km Improvised Explosive Device in Anantnag district in south Kashmir, official sources said.

Since 1989, about a dozen rebel groups have been battling Indian rule in the Muslim-majority region. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the insurgency since then.
