Montero, in his first international game in two years, forced the tie against the favored Mexicans.

Richard Morales was sent off only seven minutes before the tying goal for a late body tackle on Pavel Pardo, who scored Mexico's second goal with a hard shot from 25 yards in the 69th minute.

The teams sleepwalked through the first half until the last five minutes, when Uruguay scored against the run of play on a shot by Carlos Bueno. Then Mexico tied it in first-half injury time off an arcing shot from the wing by Ricardo Osorio.
