Half of athletes arrive in Athens

Half of the athletes who will participate in the Athens Olympics have arrived at the Olympic Village, organizers announced Saturday.

"The total number of athletes that will participate in the Olympic Games is 10,800, of which 5,500 athletes are already in the Olympic Village, representing 140 Olympic teams," said Michael Zacharatos, spokesman for the Athens Olympic Organizing Committee (ATHOC).

According to Zacharatos, peak dates are August 9 and 10, when about 2,000 athletes are expected to check in each day.

The Chinese sports delegation will arrive in Athens on Sunday.
