The world's biggest maritime disaster can be re-lived in Shanghai from Thursday at an exhibition boasting more than 300 remnants from ill-fated luxury liner the Titanic.

It is the first port of call for the touring exhibition in Asia.

More than 100,000 people waved the Titanic off from Southampton just over 92 years ago, as she set sail on her maiden voyage to disaster.

Four days into the voyage, a lookout in the crow's nest spotted the iceberg that sank the unsinkable, killing 1,502 people.

In all, 705 lives were saved.

Between 1987 and 2000, the US, French and Russian divers dived to explore the wreck.

Their tireless work has made the exhibition possible, and visitors to the Titanic Experience and Priceless Artefact Exhibition, which opened yesterday at the Shanghai International Media Centre, will see articles brought up from the sea bed more than 3,700 metres below.

In fact, more than 6,000 pieces of jewellery, ceramics, glass and other items were salvaged.

The famous luxury staircases, first and third-class cabins have been reproduced to their original size and design and there is even a simulated sinking experience to make the whole show as realistic as possible.

The Titanic was 269 metres long, 28 metres wide and weighed a massive 46,328 tons. She stood taller above water than most urban buildings of the time.

"The most exciting thing of my life would be to go down in a small submarine and see the actual wreck with my own eyes," said Mark Lach, vice-president of Creative and Design in RMS Titanic Inc, which took part in all diving missions.
