China will reduce Olympic stadiums

China will save money by building five Olympic stadiums in Beijing instead of the 10 originally planned, state media has reported.

China is due to spend $37 billion on the 2008 Games, with at least $2 billion going towards ultra-modern facilities, many of which are already under construction.

"Beijing is going to trim its original plan," the People's Daily said.

"Building stadiums should be in line with the principles of careful calculation and strict budgeting. Efforts should be made to save investment," the newspaper quoted Beijing's Communist Party chief Liu Qi as saying.

"If we can renovate an old stadium, we will not build a new one. If we can use a temporary building, we will not build a permanent one," said Liu, who is also chairman of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games.

China has already halted construction of the "bird nest" stadium, designed as the centrepiece of the Games at a cost of 3 billion yuan.

New blueprints show a roofless stadium, which could save 250 million yuan ($30.21 million), according to experts quoted by the newspaper.
