China still top-ranked in medal standings

China firmly stayed at the top spot of the overall medal standings at the end of the fourth day's competitions at the 12th Paralympic Games in Athens on September 21.

With gold medals from athletics, power lifting, table tennis and track cycling, the Chinese accumulated 21 gold medals, 23 silvers and 17 bronzes to total at 61.

Britain remained at the second place, with a medal credit of 15-9-10 for a medal tally of 35, and France jumped six slots up to the third place, with a medal record of 10-11-10 to total at 31.

Germany rose from seventh rank to fourth at the end of Tuesday and Spain dropped one slot down to the fifth.

Chinese powerlifter Bian Jianxin came out the most impressive athlete of the day, winning the women's 48kg category with 118kg and smashing a total of eight world and Paralympic records in the process.

In the women's 56kg bodyweight category, Fatma Omar broke a total of six world and Games records during her farewell competition. The Egyptian champion lifted 130kg in an attempt that turned out to be the last of her career, as she confessed after the medal ceremony, which earned her warm cheers and applause.

World table tennis powerhouse China further consolidated its domination in the Paralympic Games as their well-prepared players ruled in the individual events in Athens. The Chinese swept the women's individual Class 5, 6-8 and 9 and men's individual Class 4 titles on competitions day 4, losing only in one final. It also tallied another two bronze medals in the relevant matches.

And exciting games took place in the opening competition of sitting volleyball for both men and women, at the Helliniko Fencing Hall.

In the women's preliminary round, the Netherlands overcame Ukraine 3-0 and China later beat Slovakia with a same straight-setvictory, in one hour and four minutes.

The thrilling match of the day was the one between the United States and Finland. Both teams tried their best to win the game in front of 700 spectators who couldn't stop cheering their efforts.

After two hour's efforts, the teams ended up in an exhausting "finale", with the Americans winning the match three sets to two.

Ukraine play Slovakia, the Unite States meet China and the Netherlands face Finland on Wednesday, in women's preliminaries.

In the men's sector, Iran trounced Japan 3-0 in Pool A to be in great shape for the possibility of a fourth consecutive gold medal, and Germany dominated Finland 3-0.

In pool B, Bosnia-Herzegovina played a powerful game to defeat host team Greece 3-0 and in the last match of the day Egypt edged the United States three sets to none.

Japan play Finland, Iran take on Germany, the United States face Greece and Bosnia-Herzegovina meet Egypt on Wednesday.
