Ancelotti demands more from 'world's best defence'

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said he expects better from his defence after the shock 2-1 home defeat to promoted Messina on Wednesday.

Milan had not lost a home league match since a defeat to Udinese in December.

But after an opening day 2-2 draw with Livorno and Wednesday's defeat to the Sicilians, Ancelotti said he wanted a rapid improvement.

"We are defending worse (than last season)," Ancelotti told Italy's Sky Sport.

"We are a team that are designed to attack and think more about scoring than defending but we have the best defence in the world and starting from Sunday things will improve," he added.

Milan's back four on Wednesday featured Brazil's World Cup winning captain Cafu, internationals Alessandro Nesta and Giuseppe Pancaro and former Italy captain Paolo Maldini.

Dutch defender Jaap Stam should be fit to return for Sunday's tricky test away to his former club Lazio.

Ancelotti was full of praise for Messina, whose victory followed their 4-3 win over AS Roma on Sunday.

"We were up against a determined side who played well for the whole 90 minutes," said Ancelotti.

"We weren't able to keep a hold on the game after we took the lead," he added.

Messina are back in Serie A for the first time since 1965 after climbing their way up from the lower divisions in the past seven seasons.
