China pledges to protect safety of UN staff
(CRI)
Updated: 2004-09-23 10:33

China has pledged to protect the UN staff and other security personnel in UN-involved operations in accordance with the relevant UN convention, reported China Radio International Thursday.

China's UN Ambassador Wang Guangya submitted an official document to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on China's participation into the "Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel".

Wang Guangya says that China's obligation to protect the UN staff also benefits those staff sent by China and shows China's long-term support to the UN.

He also promises that China will implement the convention with other signatory states to contribute to the world peace and security.

The "Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel" was passed in 1994 and 75 nations including China have adopted it so far.
