Stefan Koubek of Austria was suspended for three months by the International Tennis Federation on Wednesday for failing a drug test at the French Open.

Koubek tested positive for the banned substance triamcinolon acetonid, the ITF said.

Koubek, who finished the season ranked 60th, attributed the test to an injection he received May 15 as treatment for an injured wrist.

"The doctor assured me that no prohibited substances were in the medication," Koubek wrote in his diary on the Web. "I sought treatment from a recognized sports physician who knows about the list of banned substances. And I even asked if the substance that he was giving me was 100 percent safe."

The ITF said it rejected his defense but does accept that there was no intent on his part to enhance performance.

It also disqualified his results from the French Open and took away his ranking points and prize money. He reached the third round at Roland Garros before losing to David Nalbandian.
