7 BILL TILDEN ONE of the greatest sportsmen of the 1920s, Tilden had a spell of such domination that it is reckoned he went seven years without losing a single important match. The American was a triple Wimbledon winner and seven times the US Open champion, yet he only achieved greatness at the age of 27. Tilden even remained as the world's best player after having the top of his middle finger on his racquet hand amputated due to infection.
