MONTOYA'S MOVE

The race was dictated by the first few seconds, a case of 'who dares wins' with Montoya challenging Alonso in a wheel-to-wheel test of his mettle.

The Spaniard, starting on pole position for the fourth time in 11 races, blinked first.

He had no reply as Montoya surged from third place on the grid to run side by side with the Renault through the first corner before making the move stick.

"If we were going to go side-by-side into Becketts, either one of us was going to back off or we were going to go off," said Montoya, delighted to put a troubled first half of the season behind him.

"The chances were that he was going to back off before me. He's going to fight for the championship, I wasn't. I just wanted to win the race.

"It was just enough. It was pretty close," added Montoya. "I thought we were going to touch."

The remaining 59 laps came down to the pitstops before Montoya, who has now won five grands prix since his debut in 2001, crossed the line 2.7 seconds ahead of Alonso.

The final round of pitstops shattered Renault's hopes of getting both their drivers on the podium for only the second time this year, with Alonso's Italian team mate Giancarlo Fisichella again cursed by misfortune.
