Twenty killed in Afghan bus crash
(AP)
Updated: 2005-08-20 19:43

Two passenger busses collided on the main north-south road in Afghanistan, killing 20 people and injuring 27 others Saturday, officials said.

Women and children were among the victims of the crash in Shahr-e-safa district, southern Afghanistan, said district police chief Gulam Rasool.

Rescuers reached the site of the accident and were recovering the dead and rushing the injured to hospitals in the city of Kandahar, he said.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.

Most roads in Afghanistan are unsealed and accidents are common. However, the north-south road linking the city of Kandahar with the capital, Kabul, was recently refurbished with U.S. aid money.
