Student at Department of Medicine of Beijing Medical College in 1952-1957; resident physician with Beijing Children's Hospital and Beijing Xicheng District Children's Hospital, and assistant physician-in-charge with Beijing No. 2 Hospital in 1957-1984; deputy head of Xicheng District, Beijing, in 1984-1988; vice-mayor of Beijing, vice-chairwoman of RCCK National Committee, chairwoman of RCCK Beijing Municipal Committee, vice-president of All-China Women's Federation in 1988-1996.

Vice-chairwoman of National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), vice-chairwoman of RCCK National Committee, chairwoman of RCCK Beijing Municipal Committee, vice-chairwoman of All-China Women's Federation in 1996-1998; vice- chairwoman of NPC Standing Committee, chairwoman of RCCK National Committee and president of Central Socialism Academy since 1998.
