英語中有一個諺語："Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"。說到其中的" horse "，有人認為它指的是特洛伊木馬，也有人認為這里的" horse "指的是人們購買馬匹時通過查看馬的牙齒來確定馬的年齡（或健康狀況）的做法。
如果你了解特洛伊戰爭的話，就不會將這里的horse和特洛伊木馬聯系起來。如果特洛伊人真的讓特洛伊木馬張開嘴瞧一瞧的話，他們會大吃一驚，或許不會中計而落得一個被征服的下場了。不過，歷史上倒是真有一個把特洛伊木馬當“禮物”講的諺語："Beware of Greeks bearing gifts"。
相比起來，后一種看法則比較有道理。"Don't / Never look a gift horse in the mouth"這則諺語的意思是“不要對別人送給的禮品過于挑剔”（Be grateful for something that is given to you, without asking questions about it or finding fault with it.），旨在告戒人們不要對意外收獲挑肥揀瘦的。它的使用可謂由來已久，19世紀中期的美國已經有人在使用它了，而在英國，早在16世紀就有好幾本諺語集成把它收錄進去。而這則諺語的前身早在上一個千年就已經被廣泛使用了。例如，在五世紀的時候，有個叫St. Jerome的人，曾在一篇對圣經經文內容的論述中寫到："Noli...ut vulgare proverbium est, equi dentes inspicere donati,"翻譯成英文是"Don't, as the common proverb has it, look at the teeth of a gift horse."
