After seven months of effort, the north wall in Datong's ancient city renovation program has been restored. All the work, excluding Qian Tower, will be finished before Sept 15.
 
Datong's total fiscal revenue in the first seven months of 2012 has gone up to 11.80 billion yuan ($1.85 billion), an increase of 1.6 billion yuan ($251 million) or 15.7 percent from the same period last year.
 
The Five Magnificent Caves ("Wuhua" Caves in Chinese) at Yungang Grottoes in Datong city, Shanxi province are currently under maintenance. The maintenance will not affect tourists visiting other grottoes.
 
The 2012 Yungang Grottoes Tourism Festival will start on Sept 6 in the city of Datong. Highlights of the festival include the staging of the folk opera "Want to Kiss" and the opening of the Jinghuagong National Mineral Park.
 
The Yungang Grottoes scenic attraction put on a performance of the imperial ceremony saluting the Buddha on the morning of Sept 1 in Datong city, Shanxi province. On the same day, the scenic attraction held a folk custom exhibition of the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386-534) to praise the Tan Yao Monk.
 
Datong's multi-billion yuan project to renovate its ancient city will be completed by the end of 2012. The project will restore old street names, renovate ancient temples and palaces, and remove modern buildings. It has raised heated discussions online recently.
 
A colorful glaze-painted miniature of Datong's Nine-Dragon Wall became the highlight of the five-day Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the Culture and Art Center of Shuozhou city, Shanxi province on Sept 1.
 
The Datong Heyang Art Museum launched an exhibition entitled "Great Chinese Artist – Xu Beihong's Painting Exhibition" on August 20, in the city of Datong, Shanxi province. The exhibition will last for 20 days until Sept 10. Xu's wife, Liao Jingwen, and their son, Xu Qingping, attended the opening ceremony.

The controversy surrounding the announcement by Kaifeng, a city in central Henan province, that they plan to spend billions of dollars restoring their old town, has turned the spotlight on a town that has been doing just that for a number of years.
 
Thirty-five festival activities are scheduled in 10 cities and 25 counties across Shanxi to attract visitors from home and abroad between August and October.
