The Chinese language is ideal for micro blogs, which typically restrict messages to 140 characters or symbols, The Economist reported. For example, a 78-character tweet in English would be only 24 characters long in Chinese. Japanese is concise too: fans of haiku (俳句) poems in 17 syllables can tweet them readily. Though Korean and Arabic require a little more space, tweeters routinely omit syllables in Korean words and vowels in written Arabic.
《經濟學人》雜志日前刊文指出，對于每條限制在140個字符內的微博來說，漢語是適合其傳播的理想語言。例如，一條78個字符的英文消息寫成漢語只有24個字。日語也較為簡潔，俳句愛好者可以盡情在微博中書寫這種17個音節的詩歌。比較而言，韓語和阿拉伯語占用的空間多一點，但是使用韓語的網友喜歡省掉一些音節，而阿拉伯語網友則通常省略元音。

Two Chinese artifacts estimated to be worth ￡2m have been stolen during a break-in at Durham University's museum, the BBC reported. The thieves took a jade bowl and a porcelain statue. Both are understood to be Qing Dynasty Chinese pieces. Museum officials have described the objects as "highly significant" examples of Qing Dynasty craftsmanship. The green jade bowl, dated from 1769, has a Chinese poem written inside (see photo). The Dehua porcelain statue has a cream white glaze of 7 fairies in a boat and is around 30 cm in height and width respectively.
據英國廣播公司報道，英國達勒姆大學博物館內兩件中國文物日前被盜，文物價值近200萬英鎊。據了解，被盜文物是一只玉碗和一件瓷雕，均為中國清代藝術品。博物館負責人稱，被盜文物具有很高的藝術價值，是清朝工藝品的代表作。其中的翡翠玉碗為1769年文物，碗內寫有詩詞(見圖)。被盜德化瓷雕通體施乳白釉，雕刻的是七仙女乘船，高、寬約30厘米。

Apple has lost thousands of employees, and Cisco Systems, a large popular hardware company, is the top draw of former Apple employees, said Business Insider. Google, Apple's largest competitor, also brings in a lot of talent from Apple. Other companies that attract Apple talent include Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and Oracle.

Imagine sitting down at your keyboard, typing in your user name and starting work right away - no password needed. That's a vision that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, part of the US Defense Department, wants to turn into a reality. The technology, called the cognitive fingerprint, relies solely on an individual's distinct keystroke characteristics, including the length of time a user holds down a given key and moves from one particular key to another, The New York Times reported.

An Australian man protesting elitism disrupted the 158th Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race when he swam into the path of rowers on the River Thames Saturday, foreign media reported. The historic rowing race was brought to a standstill at the halfway point of the course and there was a 31-minute delay before it could be restarted. The man, Trenton Oldfield, 35, claimed responsibility for the stunt on a blog entitled "Elitism Leads to Tyranny".

Professional soccer players are smarter than the average man, rather than what the public might perceive them as, that is, head-first into every impulsive thought that occurs to them, Swedish researchers have found. There is a correlation between cognitive ability and the number of goals and assists a soccer player scores, according to the findings. Researchers claimed that the general conception of "silly soccer players" is because players have received less education as a result of playing the game at an early age. They appeared awkward but are essentially smart.

It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but an Australian scientist named Monica Gagliano and her team have discovered that plants can, in fact, "talk" to each other, Australian media reported. By studying the roots of maize(玉米), the team found that the young plants emitted and reacted to particular sounds. The roots leaned toward the source of a continuous sound.
