第66屆戛納電影節開幕
The 66th Cannes Film Festival, one of the world's leading annual cinema showcases, kicked off Wednesday evening in the rain. Movie stars, all wearing fabulous evening dresses, braved the rain while walking past photographers and videographers, heading to the opening ceremony venue - Cannes Film Palace. Recent Oscar rivals Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee were together again. The two are serving as jurors at the French festival. The 2013 edition, which runs from May 15 to 26, will showcase nearly 80 movies. Chinese director Jia Zhangke's "A Touch of Sin" becomes the first Chinese entrant for the Palme d'Or in 3 years.

臺灣軍艦戰機高調軍演
Taiwan's military vessels are taking part in a joint marine drill with coast guard patrol vessels in waters off southern Taiwan Thursday, Taiwan media reported. Two Mirage 2000 jets and an E-2K Hawkeye early-warning plane also took part after a Kidd-class destroyer was deployed earlier, Taiwan military authorities confirmed. The coast guard sent 4 ships to join the exercise in the Bashi Channel. On Wednesday Taiwan implemented a new round of sanctions against the Philippines to rebuff their response to the killing of a fisherman from Taiwan.
據臺灣媒體報道，16日，臺灣軍方與海巡部門在臺灣島南部海域實施聯合海上軍演。軍方證實，除了此前出航的基德級驅逐艦，本次巴士海峽軍演還出動了兩架幻影2000戰機和一架E-2K預警機；海巡部門則出動了4艘艦艇。由于菲律賓未對射殺臺灣漁民一事做出恰當回應，臺灣15日對菲律賓啟動新一輪制裁。
>New rain wreaks more havoc
暴雨再襲湘27萬人受災
One person died and more than 270,000 others were affected by a new round of rain in Hunan, local flood control authorities said Wednesday, Xinhua reported. It was the 2nd bout of rain to hit the region in the last 10 days. It destroyed 1,760 houses and damaged 170,000 mu of crops. The first round of rainstorms hit most parts of the province from May 6 to 9, leaving 7 people dead and affecting 420,000 others. Downpours have also swept provinces including Jiangxi, Hubei and Guangdong.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Wednesday that he and his cabinet will follow the statement made by the then-prime minister Tomiichi Murayama in 1995 on Japan's reflection and apologies to war-related history, people.com.cn reported. Abe said that he never denied Japan's invasion and colonial occupation, adding Japan deeply regrets having inflicted great damage and suffering on China and the Korean Peninsula.

An Air India flight was forced to land after the pilot was locked out of the cockpit during a toilet break, the BBC reported. He was unable to gain access to the cockpit because of a jammed door and all efforts to open the door, even from inside by the co-pilot, failed, an Air India statement said. Flight AI 403, which was travelling from Delhi to Bangalore, was diverted to Bhopal Airport. The plane continued its journey about 3 hours later.

Because of the abnormally sunny weather, a private school in Washington state in the US decided to give 205 students a day off to enjoy the sunshine, The Washington Post reported. Angelina Jolie revealed Tuesday that she has undergone a preventive double mastectomy because she had a very high risk of breast cancer. Jolie said that because of this gene, known as BRCA1, her doctors estimated she had an 87% risk of breast cancer and 50% risk of ovarian cancer.
安吉麗娜·朱莉本周二自曝已接受預防性雙乳切除術，因為她本人罹患乳腺癌的風險極高。朱莉表示自己攜帶一種叫做BRCA1的缺陷基因，醫生推測她有87%的風險患乳腺癌，50%的風險患卵巢癌。

朱莉表示，自己有基因缺陷(carries a faulty gene)，因此決定盡可能將風險最小化(minimize the risk)。此次手術，她雙側乳房的乳腺管(breast ducts)以及乳腺組織(breast tissue)均被清除，然后用乳房植入物(breast implant)填充，最后進行乳房重塑手術(reconstructive surgery)。
