Taliban and ISIS may take Afghanistan after US leaves

By Li Yang (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2014-10-28 14:41

After the United States and the United Kingdom withdraw their troops from Afghanistan, the "power vacuum" left by them could trigger civil war in the country, says an article in the Beijing News. Excerpts:

The North Atlantic Treat Organization (NATO), under the name of international army, declared the end of war in Afghanistan one year earlier. In fact, the main power of NATO army is from the US. Only after the US withdraws its troops can the war initiated by the US come to an end.

Although the war in Afghanistan is not the bloodiest war for the US, the US has learned no fewer lessons from it, especially the lessons of Iraq.

The US will continue to support the security forces of Afghanistan, and more than 10,000 soldiers will remain in US military bases in the country for a long time.

But the Afghanistan security forces remain too weak to meet the needs of national defense. After the US and the UK withdraw their combat troops, the lengthy international war could become a lasting civil war.

The chaos in Iraq and Syria caused by the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) has escalated since the US withdrew its troops from the Iraq, because the Iraq government wasn't able to fill the "power vacuum" left by the US forces.

The situation in Afghanistan shares many similarities with that of Iraq. The Afghanistan government cannot effectively control many parts of the country's territory. The Taliban forces and ISIS can take the opportunity to fill the vacuum left by the US.
