Britain beefs up security after Brussels attacks

(Xinhua) Updated: 2016-03-23 00:42
LONDON -?Britain has increased security presence "at key locations" in the country in the wake of a series of explosions at a Brussels airport and a metro station on Tuesday morning.

"As a precaution, forces across Britain have increased police presence at key locations, including transport hubs, to protect the public and provide reassurance. This is not in relation to any specific information or intelligence," said Mark Rowley, national lead for counter-terrorism police in Britain.

"In London specifically, the Metropolitan Police Service has mobilized additional officers who will carry out highly visible patrols at key locations around the capital, including the transport network," added Rowley who is also assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

He noted that the number of police officers deployed would be regularly assessed.

"We are in close liaison with the Belgium authorities and will continue to monitor the situation. The threat to the UK from international terrorism remains as severe as it has been since August 2014, meaning an attack is highly likely," he warned.

He also urged the public and businesses to be alert and report anything suspicious to the police.

On Tuesday morning, British Prime Minister David Cameron chaired an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the events in Brussels.

"I am shocked and concerned by the events in Brussels. We will do everything we can to help," he said on his Twitter account.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labor Party, also expressed his concerns over the attacks.

"I am extremely concerned for all caught up in unfolding events in Brussels. Solidarity with emergency services and those affected," he tweeted.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond deplored the attacks as "senseless violence."

"UK (is) offering Belgian authorities every assistance we can. We stand united against terrorism," he said.

"We are in contact with Belgian authorities and checking if any Britons are caught up in Brussels incidents," he added.

According to media reports, at least 26 people were killed and 136 injured in the explosions at the airport and on a city subway train in Brussels.
